Fall is here (Thank Goodness!) and the 400th anniversary of John Gaither’s arrival in Jamestown, Virginia is fast approaching. Larry Campbell and I looked at various venues to host our 2020 reunion while we were in Williamsburg in July. After discussion with the Board, we selected the Best Western Williamsburg Historic District Hotel. The dates for the reunion are
Thursday, June 4th through Sunday, June 7th, 2020. I am excited to announce that we were able to secure a room rate per night of $135.28 (taxes included). That rate is nearly ½ the amount quoted to us by other facilities. Because of the low cost, we expect our block of rooms to fill up quickly. Make your reservations EARLY! While this hotel is not a destination resort, it has all the amenities - - -pool, fitness center, restaurant, lounge and meeting rooms. Best of all, it has ample parking near your room and is located about one mile from Colonial Williamsburg. It is an easy walk! We will receive a full, hot buffet breakfast with our rooms. You are going to need a full breakfast because you will be busy the remainder of the day! As it stands now, the schedule is as follows:
Thursday, June 4th: Check in at 3:00 PM
Reception in Hospitality Room at 5:00 PM
For those who are interested, we can arrange a Ghost
Walk Tour of Colonial Williamsburg at 8:00 PM. I have
been on this tour and the actors/ghosts are fabulous and
Friday, June 5th: We will board buses about 8:00 AM
First stop will be the Jamestown/Scotland ferry. This is
your opportunity to see James Island from the same
perspective as John Gaither did when he arrived on the
Ship George in 1620.
Our next destination will be the Jamestown Settlement,
an authentic reproduction of James Fort, with replica
sailing ships and a Powhatan Indiana Village. We will
spend several hours at the settlement and then continue
to Historic Jamestown. Lunch will be at the Dale House
Café, where we will meet our guide for a personal tour
of James Fort. While we are still working on the details,
it is our intention to remain at the Fort after closing, for
A Worship service in the Church and a reception at the
Dale House Café with Mark Summers, Historian of
Historic Jamestown, as our Speaker. His subject matter
will be the Puritans of Virginia and their expulsion from
the Colony. Light snacks will be available.
Saturday, June 6th: We will again board buses for a trip to The Museum of
The American Revolution in Yorktown. We know that
Henry Chew Gaither, a Benjamin descendant, served
with General Washington at Yorktown. Lunch will be on
waterfront in Yorktown if possible. Our annual meeting
will be at the hotel Saturday evening, with dinner
afterwards. Our guest speaker will be Jane McWilliams,
former assistant Director of the Maryland State Archives.
She will continue the story of the expelled Virginia
Puritans and their settlement of the state of Maryland.
Sunday, June 7th: Breakfast and goodbyes
A final schedule and costs will be published in the Spring Newsletter. We expect tour costs, exclusive of food to run in the $150.00 range total for all three days. A seven day pass to Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown will be included in the cost, as well as entrance to Jamestown Settlement.
PLEASE PUT THESE DATES ON YOUR SCHEDULE AND BOOK YOUR HOTEL ROOM NOW. We expect our block of rooms to fill up rapidly. If you have any interest in your family history, this is the reunion to attend. It will be special and 400 years only happens once.
We look forward to seeing you!
